Keokuk County Veterinary Clinic, P.C. is a progressive three doctor mixed practice looking for an associate veterinarian. Interest in multiple facets of a diverse practice desired. Large animal is predominately cow/calf with a growing clientele of small animal, equine, small ruminant. We have two locations and all doctors share on call equally.  We try to keep a good work life balance by having scheduled days off during the week depending on the rotation.  We have digital radiograph, portable arms free ultrasound, in house cbc/chem, indoor heated large animal haul-in with hydraulic chute and tilt table.  As a prospective hire at one time I felt that only the highlights of a practice are described in an add. So I will speak off the cuff a little bit and hopefully the moderators are ok with it. We are a mixed practice in a rural area. We are basically the only game in town. When a client needs us they call. Sometimes it will be at 2 AM. You WILL have to get out of bed to pull calves or to see a sick dog. It's no fun, and we know it. Sometimes the receptionist will over book you to get a sick animal in and it screws up your whole day. That's no fun and we are aware of that. However, it helps to reinforce one of our core values, which is compassion. It's not the animal's fault they didn't call until Friday at 4:45.  We try to discourage that type of behavior, but it will still happen.  Mentorship is freely offered here. I was a new grad once. However it's a two way street. We expect you to work as hard at it as we do. We aren't going to spoon feed you, but you won't be on your own either. We develop and grow as a team. Some days you will be out the door by 5. Some days you will not. It's the nature of the beast and is not going to change. It is hot and humid in the summer, and can get to -25 in the winter. The cows don't care. Some of our clients are jerks, it stinks, we know (abusive clients get fired). Most of them are wonderful, and are great people, you take the good with the bad. They will be your friends and neighbors and you will see them at school, at church, and at the restaurant. It's a small community and bridges are burned easily. The jerk needs help, the same as the nice guy. Some clients have great facilities, others not so much. Most people with no facilities know that we will not work on the end of a rope. That being said we will do all we can to keep you in a safe environment, but animals are unpredictable. You will probably get bit, kicked, run up a gate, etc at some point. If you can problem solve the guy with a sick dog and $100 to his name, show up with a smile on you face, and have a positive attitude you will do well here. We are a close group of folks and work as a team. Get done early with appointments? Run out and help finish the chute job. Many hands make light work. We laugh together about the ridiculous, and we cry together when the friendly old lab just can't go on anymore. We have potlucks and bonfires in the summer. In my opinion it's a great place to raise kids. We don't really have much of a night life here, but the fish bite hard!
