Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Managing Medical Cases (60%):

• Perform medical intakes on all new NYPD and CE cases admitted to CARE and in collaboration with partner departments for animals admitted to veterinary partner hospitals, AAH, ARC, and Adoption Center as needed.
• Provide high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of cruelty, neglect, and at-risk patients.
• Develop skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment plans following ARC/CARE/AAH medical parameters and guidelines.   
• Provide and ensure high quality individualized care while maintaining overall population health using shelter medicine best practices.
• Provide medical care for outpatients of owned, fostered out and/or animals in transition to the Adoption Center.
• Maintain thorough, high quality medical records, documenting all exam findings, test results, and treatments.
• Work with partner hospitals as needed, including referral for advanced care and assessing medical stability of new cases at partner hospitals.
• Respond to after-hours medical concerns.
• Oversee and maintain the CARE census.

Supervisory Duties/Managing Patient Flow (20%):

• Oversee the daily medical care and case flow of the animals housed in CARE.
• Lead Daily CARE Medical rounds meeting.
• Lead monthly CARE LVT meeting.
• Maintain proactive communication with the ARC and CARE Senior Director and ARC Medical Supervisor.
• Support ARC and CARE Senior Director in handling any adverse client, staff, or patient events appropriately and professionally.
• Develop, disseminate and keep current the CARE Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensure their implementation.  SOP’s must balance best shelter medicine practices with the needs of AAH and other departments.
• Model a standard of continued commitment to improve and expand upon all aspects of CARE including, medical, behavior, housing, safety and animal flow.
• Perform and oversee exams, diagnostic tests and medical treatments with full utilization of Fear Free medical handling.  Ensure LVTs and ACTs are practicing Fear Free handing.
• Oversee and train the veterinary interns
• Oversee all medical euthanasia decisions
• Regularly review patient’s statuses, giving direction to other veterinarians as necessary to ensure timely care and movement of patients through the ASPCA.
• Consult with attending medical and forensic veterinarians and determine medical prognosis for all patients under the CARE’s care to make timely and appropriate euthanasia decisions following CARE/ARC/AAH protocols and guidelines. 
• Assist the ARC and CARE Senior Director to ensure CARE has appropriate DVM coverage 7 days per week.
• In collaboration with the AAH management team, ensure the CARE veterinary team is scheduled for all required trainings, meetings and lectures.

Interdepartmental Communication/Administrative/Other (20%)

• Collaborate and support the work of partner departments, particularly the Humane Law Enforcement, Community Engagement and the Adoption Center departments.
• Maintain strict confidentiality when dealing with criminal cases.
• Attend weekly behavior and interdepartmental meetings.
• Attend staff meetings, doctor meeting and other requested meetings.
• Provide medical information and represent CARE to the public and to media when requested.
• Provide a high level of customer service to external and internal clients.
• Create, model and follow written and verbally communicated ASPCA and CARE Standard Operating Procedures.
• Assist the Senior Director with special projects, presentations and data collection as requested
• Other duties as assigned.

Additional Information:

• This is a full-time exempt position that works out of our 92nd Street office, but the incumbent must be flexible, as some early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays will be required
• DVM degree (or equivalent) with NY State veterinary license required
• Veterinary internship or minimum 5 years’ small animal medicine experience without internship.  Previous experience in shelters preferred but not required
• Willing to complete the University of Florida Shelter Medicine Certificate or comparable program approved by ARC and CARE Senior Director within 6 months of hire
• Must be able to be Fear Free Certified or certified within 3 months of hire
